About Us

The Abbey of Saint Alban and Saint Æthelwold is the Diocesan Headquarters of the Diocese of Whithorn, as well as a territorial abbey of the Orthodox Church. We keep the Divine Offices, or Canonical Hours of the Church, as well as celebrate the liturgy of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the benefit of the whole world. The Canonical Hours, as well as the regular celebration of the Mass is according to the ancient Use of Sarum, which prevailed throughout the British Isles in the Mediaeval Period, prior to the Schism between East and West. The majority of the Dioceses's priests have bi-ritual faculties, and occasional celebrations of  the Divine Liturgy according to the Russo-Byzantine tradition are celebrated at the Abbey or one of its dependencies on principally Russian Feasts when pastorally appropriate.

While we do make use of Latin in our regular services, we stand behind the Orthodox Church's long-established tradition of ministering to the people of God in their native language. For this reason, the majority of didactic material during the Mass, as well as in our Offices are undertaken in the traditional English of the Authorised versions of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, which forms the foundation for the venerable tradition of expressing the Word of God in the English Language.
